Toddler Tuesdays

6:00 AM

As you all know, that is if you are a parent, life is all about poop these days (ok not really, but really)– especially in the early ages. And if you are a new parent to be – be prepared to become desensitized to poop and poop talk. And if you think you will not talk about poop, think again (you will also, accidentally say potty, aloud to people who are not toddlers or infants). Go ahead, try not to. I dare you.

When he was 2 years old, I started to feel like I should really get a head start on the potty training thing, especially with the impending birth of his sister, we really didn't want to have both of them in diapers!  So we would occasionally ask him if he wanted to go on the potty (tip: don't ask them, just take them to the potty. it works much better, as we have found out). He did pretty well for awhile. Months would be filled with little marked stars (we would do stickers too but we never did the jelly bean or that type of reward system - not because I don't believe in it, but because - well, I never got around to picking up any type of lil reward candies), then one day he just eased off on it, maybe its that thing they call regressing? (that and we had our hands full) He started to undo things that he was big enough to do - like put on his shoes and or clothes, and even walk. He wanted to be carried more (more hugs and kisses for me) often and a few times he even asked for us to spoon feed him, just like his sister. He was also acting out a lot more..anyway, potty training just went by the wayside and with the chaos of our daily lives, it didn't find itself back in our routines again.

Well, fast forward to last Thursday where at his daycare, he was going on the potty more frequently and coming home with full sticker charts of accomplished potty peeing (and sometimes pooping). Then one day he said he didn’t want to wear his pull up or diaper. Friday was spent diaper free except for nap time (even though he insisted on not wearing the pull up to which they decided wearing the underwear over the pull up was a funny alternative) but he woke up dry and quickly used the potty when he awoke. During our weekend, we continued - despite the fact we didn't stay home much. Although, there have been two minor accidents, but were surprisingly minor. Saturday we stocked up on underwear and training pants that he picked out and have been pretty successful (high fives all around!) during the weekend. Charles and I commented to each other on how amazed we both were at the appearance of ease with it all. I know it aint over yet and we haven't had a full week of this awesome feat, but I'm still holding out hope that the $28/mo we spend on packages of his diapers, can be put to something else - oh like a night out, perhaps? That's $336/yr people!

Jax, at 3 is an amazing little human. He surprises me each day. He also, frustrates me each day too, but what do you expect from a 3 year old? I can't stay upset long and it's usually because my expectations get the best of me (that and I'm tired and also holding a teething baby who is now not sleeping thru the night). I guess he also won't be a toddler for long, as it turns out -  the "experts" say that 3 is the last year of toddlerhood, so 'll try and cherish them..

  1. I heard a lot of horror stories about potty training, but it happened really quickly for us and much earlier than we expected. I think the key is that we let Kale take the lead - just like you did with Jax. They'll let you know when they're ready! Also, not making a big deal out of it when there are accidents. Because, really, it's not that big of a deal.... (and this is coming from a total type A - I don't have a laid back bone in my body).
